I'm sorry I'm not being very responsive right now but I'm working hard at finalizing 6 courses at VSCC that start on Thursday.  It would have been a lot easier if the TBR course management team hadn't screwed something up this weekend and wiped out three of my courses.  <sigh>  I do plan to look at everyone's suggestions and come up with my recommendations for the ETMR entry angle and explanation of how a large, charged vehicle could interfere with signals from one or more GPS satellites and give us a "signature" that would get someone's attention at AFGWC or FAA or NSA.

What's worth mining on Gaia?

Folks -

I have had some trouble over the years figuring out why a civilization would come to earth to mine a particular element or mineral. If you can move massive objects across intergalactic space, you can surely transmute whatever element you need from either fission or fusion reactions at a lower energetic cost that accelerating and decelerating a mining robot to get to earth from who know where, and doing the same for a payload....  There is an alternative scenario.

There have been estimates that to store a single copy of every possible 200-amino acid protein would require greater than the volume of the observable universe (there are twenty natural amino acids in the body, so 20 raised to the 200 power is a very very big number that multiplies a small, but not infinitesimal volume of one protein). The number is even bigger if you include other natural and unnatural amino acids - that brings it to ~500, and 500 raised to the 200 is humongous. It gets even more complicated if you think about the number of possible life forms, such as bacteria. Try to build one from scratch with no prior history and you'll fail miserably because of all the ways such organisms can fail. This is what happened to to the pharmaceutical companies that thought they could design drugs from first principles, and hence why some people search the Amazon jungle for new plants or microbial species.

So what does this have to do with the ETMR? It is mining to look for proteins in rock-eating bacteria, and it only needs to send back, by radio or light, the chemical/genetic structure of what it finds. No need to rocket a payload back. Why rock? Maybe it's from a culture that has destroyed its atmosphere and has had to move underground. There are bacteria kilometers deep in the earth's crust that live off of chemical energy rather than sunlight. They may want to see if they can find some bugs that do what they need. It's a lot easier to look for an existing solution to the problem of evolution than it is to start from scratch. Also little societal cost once the ETMR is built and shipped - it is sending back data.

I've got a number of articles and books on bacteria in rocks - tied into the orgins of life literature, a subject I've taught about a lot over the years.

At last I can justify the expense of the ETMR - just like we justify sending robots to Mars. Only for the ETMR, they are only interested in bacteria that live in rocks.... Go figure!

I don't spend a lot of time at the beach, but I always look for it. Until I saw the picture, I think I may have been looking at that wrong place - I was looking at the horizon on either side of the sun. The advantage of the difficulty in seeing it is that we could create an email or local report of its observation coincident with the landing...  Or we could reference the possibility that this was a source of confusion.
Keep us posted on the GPS.

Mike - at some point we need to figure out how fast the the ETMR can hit the ocean without bouncing or breaking up. That will give us a final angle of approach, and decide whether it needs retrorockets, ablative protection, or shuttle-type glide aerodynamics, or all three. I think the best place to start is with a shuttle descent, and then figure out how much we can steepen it up because we don't mind a high-velocity water impact with rapid decelleration. We are not doing a Apollo paracute into water or a Soyuz paracute onto land... This means the ETMR can be bigger and heavier. We have yet to decide how big ETMR will be. Then the questions are how hot will it be on reentry, will it be incandescent, and what will it look like?

I think we need to look into where it hits with respect to population centers, and minimize the observability. That will make our story more credible, and also be the point of analytic discussion in the report.  Why didn't anyone see it? Well, it was coming in from the sun, at low angle, at sunset, out of site of people, and was already below the horizon at City X when it was incandescent.

Just a couple of items:  what about a setting sun (late day) timeframe for entry of the ETMR from the west?  Seems like early evening / sunset could provide light conditions that would help mask a western approach.

Also, re GPS in general; all commercial marine vessels (including deepwater rigs) utilize DGPS systems as an inherent component of their DP (dynamic positioning) navigation systems.  A disruption of GPS service would also be noted on any large marine vessels operating in the immediate area.

I was planning to have it land in the Pacific so that it can mine into the Andes from the west, where the ocean is not highly populated, but I need your advice as to when and how the ETMR enters the atmosphere. Can it be from the east or the west? Daylight would be better. Do you need the South Atlantic Anomoly?

First pass at the event timeline

ETMR: Extraterrestrial mining robot

T=0 ETMR entry. Unattributed first signatures: Visual, acoustic, waves.  Few reports if any beyond local new story, in Spanish, from a Chilean fisherman whose cousin's boat never came back. When analyzed in retrospect, assumed to be meteor. Too big and too fast to be a plane crash.

T=1 ETMR deployment underseas. Signatures: Undersea acoustic; seabed tracks; <<Ignored>

T=1 Onset of ETMR mining activity: Disturbance of the ocean bottom; localized acoustic, thermal, beginning of neutrino flux <<Not detected at that time>>
